Well, it’s safe to say that my 2016 started off…Not so great. As I mentioned, my fiancee and I decided to take a trip to Niagara Falls, which is about a 90 minute drive from where we live. Not too bad, right? Well, let’s start the day before New Years Eve. We have two cars, mine is hit or miss to start without blowing up, so we were going to take my ladies car. Except on the 30th, her fuel line, or something, broke causing it to spray gas when driving. Not too great. Figures.
I use a lifeline and ask my dad to borrow his car. Of course, at this point (due to other past incidences) I triple checked with him to make sure the car was working fine. It has 60,000 km on it, so it’s barely been driven. He assured me that it was A.Okay. I pick up the car, bring it home, pack it up, hit the road to the Falls, when not 5 minutes into the ride, the check engine light pops on, the hood rattles, and its starting to stutter at every opportunity. Figures. I say fuck it, and continue.
We hit the highway and the rattling heats up, the stuttering is worse, and now the car won’t go above 100km/h, which is the speed limit on the highway we were taking. Fantastic. Anyway, we get to the hotel and check in without a problem – the only smooth running things the entire weekend, really. After a dinner SNAFU, we decided to head to the Fallsview Casino. I’ll keep this brief, as going into detail would lead to another novel. We tried driving, but couldn’t find parking. That’s fine, it’s only a 10 minute drive (remember that). We go back to the hotel and get a cab. It’s 40 bucks – bit pricey, but whatever. Remember that.
Get to the casino and walk around a bit, but decided to find a bar to bring in the new year. That goes alright, but we should have stayed at the casino, really, for when we went back to casino, the line up was out the door to get ID checked. Figures. Anyway, we get in, play some slots, I lose 60 bucks without winning more than like 10 cents on any given spin. Joyous. My lady had slightly better luck, but still lost in the long run. We had hoped we’d waited long enough to get a cab – it was about 1:30am.
We must have called 8 different cab companies, waited on hold for 45 minutes before they said they would send one. Of course, we go out side and people are literally jumping into occupied cabs. We knew we weren’t going to get the one that was sent for us. After about another hour of waiting for a free cab, we hail one down only for the guy to tell us it’s going to be 70 bucks. This is why I told you to remember the info from earlier. Just 3 hours ago it was 40 bucks. It’s a ten minute drive. Whatever, we didn’t have a choice. Figures.
The next day we decide to go to lunch. Start the car, and it’s more precarious than the day prior. Our plans to visit the actual falls fell through as a result, and so we spent the rest of the day in the hotel. At this point my fiancee, who is the best sport in the world, and didn’t complain one time the entire time, is starting to feel ill. Just a cold, sore throat, and tired. Just a little bit of topping on the cake.
The next day (today), we start the car – no bueno. Sure it runs, but I just don’t trust it to take us the 120km back home. Time for a tow. First off, let me say, thank fuck for auto club memberships. We had to wait a couple hours for an available tow, but the guy came. He was friendly, and towed us back to Toronto, with us in the front cab. Saved us the headache of trying to find a way home. Anywhoo, get to the garage, and I get in the car to take it off the flatbed. Turn the car on, and lo and behold, no check engine light, car’s running fine. Nothing, not a symptom of the previous 48 hours springs to life. I couldn’t believe it.
So, that’s pretty much the end of it. It was an expensive weekend which ultimately wasn’t that great an experience. But, it’s about who you’re with, not what you’re doing. And I was with my best friend, and the love of my life – so despite all of the crap, it was just fine.
That’s all really. In other news, I rebooted my Facebook page as part of my new years resolution. You can check it out here.
Until next time, everybody!
